| Adding to the references that Michel gave you in his chronicle "Hand Made Leaders" I would like to give you the formulas that the salmon fly fishers on the Miramichi uses..
Just like Michel, in New Brunswick the majority of salmon fishermen favor the Maxima material... personnaly, the barril knot is the best that I have found to tie them.
What's interesting in the hand made leaders is that you can add some tippets to them when they have gone a bit short from changng flies. Evidently you need to be able to tie them on the river.
