Leader/tippets

1- Level Line- L

Same diameter from beginning to end. Used for delicate presentations and short presentations. Inexpensive.

2- Weignt Forward- WF

•Designed with a short, progressive last section for better presentations with smaller flies. The weight is distributed toward the front for better distance.

3- Double Taper- DT

•Specially designed line for trout fishing. Progression is at either end. Excellent roll casting line

4- Shooting Head- SH

•30-35 feet of progression for longer distances.

Weight of line :

The standard line length is between 90 and 105 feet.  The lines are weighed and numbered 1 to 15 by weight. The most common lines are between 4 and 10. The smaller the number, the lighter the line.

• Short line, lightweight rod, small flies for small fish
• Long line, heavyweight rod, large flies for large fish

Lines # 3 & 4: For delicate presentations. The lightness and small diameter are ideal with small flies, especially for catching trout. Difficult with large flies and in windy conditions..

Line # 5: A delicate presentation is lost, but larger flies can be used, more power is possible in windy conditions.

Lines # 6 & 7: Between delicate presentation and power. Ideal for casting larger flies in wide rivers. Smallest line used to fish salmon and sea trout.

Lines # 8 & 9: Power, distance, large flies and longer presentations. Ideal line for salmon fishing and salt water.

Lines # 10 & 15: Used only for power, long casting and Spey casting

A floating line is used for fishing at the surface or up to 5 to 8 inches deep, particularly with dry flies.
Sinking lines are very hard to cast. This product is sold according to a designated weight that determines its sinking speed.
There also exists a floating line with a sinking tip. Casting is easier with this line

Floating line - F
 Sinking line - S
Line with sinking tip - F/S

Additional information regarding lines :

• When casting, we must pay particular attention on the amount of energy placed on the line
• Create tight loops
• Create speed in the loop
• The position of the tip of the rod in its stop position will determine the direction of the line
• WF lines are important during the presentation

Cleaning the lines:

After prolonged use of your line, a regular cleaning and lubrication is necessary. To extend the life of the line, it is recommended that it be cleaned twice a year.

• Unwind the line from the reel
• Clean well with water and soap
• Rinse and dry
• Lubricate with a product that is specially made for fishing lines

I recommend Armor All for the lubrication of the lines.

For line storage, the line must be separated from the reel and attached between two posts or around a large circular object to reduce the memory of the line. To reduce this memory, the line may be stretched.

Insect/mosquito repellents are particularly harmful to lines. Products containing DEET crack the lines. Make sure you wash your hands after using these products.

There exists a colourful display of floating lines that are easier to see by the angler. The sinking lines are mostly dark in colour, therefore not very visible to the fish. The lines that have a sinking tip are usually bright coloured, except for the tip, which is dark coloured.
