The backing lengthens the line. It is made of very fine braided nylon. When fishing salmon or large trout, it is quite essential to have a sufficient amount of backing. Usually, backing is sold in sizes of 20 or 30 lbs. Each reel model indicates clearly the quantity of backing needed.
